AT THE END OF THIS BLOG, YOU CAN WATCH a short video conversation with Zach Ashley who discusses his fascination of Jain Tirthankaras ...
But before we start, the first question that comes to mind is - Who are the 24 Jain Tirthankaras (Prophets) ?
The answer is " A Tirthankara translated in English means "prophet," "teacher," "one who makes a forges the way ..." or simply said, "one who shows the path to enlightenment - moksha". Tirthankaras are great omniscient teachers who walk the earth as humans.
Most important, a Tirthankara accomplishes and attains the highest goal of spiritual existence and then teaches people how to achieve it for themselves.
The omniscient Tirthankara appears in the world to teach humanity the way to achieve "moksha" or the liberation of the soul ... He is not an incarnation of God. He is an ordinary human being, born with a soul, who attains the state of "Moksha" resulting after intense practices of penance, equanimity and meditation. He is not defined as an Avatar (God-incarnate), but knows the ultimate power of developing a state of pure soul consciousness.
Jain Tirthankaras are not founders of any religion, and they lived as great teachers at various times during several millenniums and accomplished the highest spiritual goal of human existence. They then taught their contemporaries the way to reach their own personal enlightenment by crossing over to the safe shores of spiritual purity.
Each Tirthankara preached the same basic Jain philosophy and science of life and gave Jains a way of life to accomplish their own salvation (moksha) during the different ages and cultures in which they lived and taught.
The 24 Jain Tirthankaras are Adinatha, Ajita, Sambhava, Abhinandana, Sumati, Padmaprabha, Suparshva, Chandraprabha, Suvidhi, Shital, Shreyansa, Vasupujya, Vimala, Ananta, Dharma, Shanti, Kunthu, Ara, Malli, Mani Suvrata, Nami, Nemi, Parshva and Mahavira.
There is historical evidence for the earthly existence of the 23th Tirthankara - Parshva who lived about 250 years before Mahavira.
